Shifting Ways of perceiving, valuing and organising - together.

The main purpose of Shifting Ways is to facilitate and accompany systems change processes with postgrowth values operating at their core.

It adresses individual cognitive systems as well as social organisational systems in order to enhance deep, long-term efficient change. Movements and organisations with ecosocial visions are challenged to work on their inner processes as much as on their outer goals.

Vision

Ecosocial Transformation

Ecological collapse, inequality, and extraction share one root: a worldview that separates society from ecology, treating the economy as something to optimize apart from the living systems it depends on. As long as that separation holds, every solution stays partial. Ecosocial transformation names the alternative — a world where social and ecological flourishing are held as one interdependent whole. It's not a fixed destination but a direction: away from extraction, toward regeneration. This is the horizon the project moves toward, structure by structure and perception by perception.

Mission

Postgrowth-Oriented Systems Change

Growth has quietly become the default measure of success — organizing decisions and incentives around the assumption that more is always better. But an economy built on infinite growth cannot, by definition, cohere with a finite planet, so ecosocial transformation stays out of reach as long as growth remains unquestioned. This project applies systems change methodology directly to that structure — replacing growth-as-goal with sufficiency, redistribution, and ecological limits. Growth is targeted not because it's the only problem, but because it's often the hidden one beneath otherwise well-intentioned systems. Working at that level is what makes deeper transformation structurally possible, not just aspirational.

Goals

Bridging Inner and Outer Systems

Structural redesign and inner transformation aren't two separate tracks but one continuous field. A new governance model or economic structure will only hold if the people inside it have also shifted how they perceive interdependence, power, and limits. This is why every other goal here moves on both levels at once, rather than treating one as preparation for the other.

Supporting Organisation Systems of Ecosocially Oriented Projects

Many organizations already committed to ecosocial values still run on inherited structures — competitive, extractive, growth-oriented — because good intentions don't automatically produce coherent systems. This work helps such organizations translate their values into their actual architecture: how decisions get made, how resources flow, how power is distributed — so the structure itself reflects what the project claims to stand for.

Postgrowth Education

Many organisations are not aware of postgrowth alternatives yet - even though this concept increasingly gains international attention. Before an organization can build differently, it needs language and frameworks for imagining an economy not organized around growth. Postgrowth thinking is made concrete and usable, so it becomes something people can actually design toward.

Teaching Contemplative Techniques

Structural and economic literacy alone doesn't shift perception — that requires direct practice. Contemplative techniques are taught here not as personal wellness add-ons, but as the discipline through which people learn to notice the patterns, defenses, and habits of mind that keep old systems running, even inside projects trying to build something new.

Uncovering the Unconscious Reproduction of Criticised Patterns

This is where contemplative practice becomes structurally consequential: organizations that critique hierarchy, extraction, or exclusion often reproduce those same dynamics unconsciously, simply because the underlying patterns run deeper than stated values. This work makes those patterns visible — not to shame, but so they can actually be worked with rather than silently repeated.

Beyond Critique Towards Hands-On Implementation

Critique alone can become its own comfortable holding pattern — clear-eyed about what's wrong, but never quite building the alternative. This project treats critique as a starting point, not a destination, and stays with organizations through the harder, slower work of actually implementing new structures, decisions, and practices.

Working from a Place of Compassion, Integrity and Wise Discernment

None of the above holds without this. Uncovering unconscious patterns, building new structures, and educating toward postgrowth thinking can easily tip into judgment, burnout, or rigid ideology if not held with care. This is less a separate goal than the quality of attention the rest depends on — compassion that keeps the work humane, integrity that keeps it honest, and discernment that knows what each situation actually needs.

FAQ

What's Ecosocial Transformation?

A fundamental reorganization in how human societies organize their relationship with each other and with the ecological systems they're part of. It's a moving away from extraction, economic growth-for-its-own-sake, and separation between "economy" and "environment," toward economies and institutions that regenerate both social and ecological wellbeing as one interdependent whole. It's a horizon, not a program: it doesn't prescribe a specific economic model, only the outcome that human and ecological flourishing must be reconciled.

What's Systems Change?

A shift that alters the underlying structure, rules, and relationships that produce a system's outcomes — rather than treating individual symptoms in isolation. It targets the patterns, incentives, and interdependencies that keep a system behaving the way it does, so that new, more life-sustaining patterns can emerge in their place. Systems Change Methodology sees the system as relational (not mechanical), with multiple, simultaneous leverage points. It works at the level of structure, not symptoms, with longtime emergence over linear top-down design, holding inner and outer structures together.

What's Postgrowth?

An economic orientation nested within the horizon of ecosocial transformation — it shifts the goal of the economy away from GDP growth as the primary measure of success, toward sufficiency, redistribution, and staying within ecological limits. Postgrowth is agnostic about growth itself: it doesn't demand growth stop or reverse, it simply refuses to treat growth as the organizing objective. Some sectors might still grow, others might shrink or stay flat — what matters is that growth is no longer the target. A Postgrowth Transition is a shift away from GDP growth as the primary measure of economic success and organizing goal, toward economies designed around sufficiency, redistribution, and ecological limits — meeting human needs without requiring perpetual material and energy throughput increase.

What's Contemplative Practice?

Contemplative practices are mental training methods drawn from ancient traditions like Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism, as well as modern psychology and neuroscience. They involve directing sustained attention and awareness toward internal and external phenomena—such as breath, thoughts, emotions, values, or worldly events—with the aim of cultivating qualities like patience, compassion, openness, and equanimity. Through training non-judgmental observation and ethical reflection, practitioners develop insight into their cognitive patterns and strengthen positive mental states. Common methods include meditation, reflective writing, and movement practices.

Why are they all connected?

Yes, absolutely. The component is built using native Framer tools, so you can tweak fonts, colors, spacing, animations, and layout however you like.

Do you really believe in a global Ecosocial Transformation?

No matter how many predictive scenarios we are building, we are always heading into an unknown future. This project does not have the premise of „changing the world“ or „saving the planet“, nor the belief that everyone will jump on the same horse. Instead, what drives this project are deep care, compassion, and hope. It wants to serve society authentically with inspiration, joy and creativity, and it invites the ones who resonate to come along an join a bottom-up movement.
